an Artist's Co-op in Truchas, New Mexico on the high road to Taos

1642 Highway 76, Truchas, New Mexico
Picture
Visitors to our co-op gallery are surprised at how much there is to see within. We have the work of 70 artisans in four rooms of our building. We have a warm fire place for winter and front porch benches for summer. We have a wide variety of talent: painters, potters, jewelers, quilters, photographers, weavers, retablo artists, leather craftsmen, metals, wood workers and a variety of artisan crafts. The High Road MarketPlace, Inc. occupies an old store building along highway 76 in Truchas. We’re next to the Martinez family cemetery and the Truchas Penitente Morada.

The village of Truchas, New Mexico perches on a spectacular mountain top with glorious views to the west and 13,000 ft. Mountain peaks to the east. Truchas has history as one of the first spanish land grant villages established in 1754. Decendents of the first families still live here and many of the old adobe buildings are still lived in. An art community has been well established for decades.

Truchas is a popular tourist stop as a high point along the scenic high road to Taos. Summer draws bicycle touring groups, motorcycle and classic car clubs taking advantage of the scenery as well as the recently updated highway 76 between Truchas and the village of Chimayó

Our History

The High Road MarketPlace began as a project of the High Road Artisans originally funded by an economic development project of the federal government through La Jicarita Enterprise Community. Since its inception in 1998, the MarketPlace has grown considerably in size and scope and has continued its operation providing year-round exposure for the artists of the region. For several years the gallery was located in the village of Chimayo, moving to Truchas in 2005.

Our Future

On January 1, 2012 the High Road MarketPlace members ended their long term relationship with the High Road Artisans and became a corporation.  We are currently reorganizing as an independent non-profit tax-exempt organization with a new Board of Directors. We have dreams of  finally acquiring grant funding (we were not able to apply for grants as part of the High Road Artisans). Besides improving our current gallery space we are excited about offering education, mini studio classes, technology resources, mentoring and inspiration to a talented local community.
